چکیده

7 Chapter Soil factors are an important consideration for successful wildland range development or improvement programs. Even though many soil improvement and amelioration practices are not realistic for wildlands, their evaluation is an important step in selection of adapted plant materials for revegetation. This chapter presents information for wildland managers on: the importance of soils physical, chemical, and nutrient considerations in wildland restoration and rehabilitation; the basis for evaluating wildland soil suitability for plant growth; effects of management activities on soil factors; assessment of soil nutrient deficiencies in terms of plant needs; development of a fertilizer prescription; and principles of fertilization of wildlands.

Spectral analysis of charcoal on soils: implications for wildland fire severity mapping methods

Recent studies in theWestern United States have supported climate scenarios that predict a higher occurrence of large and severe wildfires. Knowledge of the severity is important to infer long-term biogeochemical, ecological, and societal impacts, but understanding the sensitivity of any severity mappingmethod to variations in soil type and increasing charcoal (char) cover is essential before w...

Public acceptance of wildland fire and fuel management: panel responses in seven locations.

Wildland fire affects both public and private resources throughout the United States. A century of fire suppression has contributed to changing ecological conditions and accumulated fuel loads. Managers have used a variety of approaches to address these conditions and reduce the likelihood of wildland fires that may result in adverse ecological impacts and threaten communities. Public acceptanc...
